Described by the New York Times as “a man apparently hellbent on earning the title of World’s Least Rustic Banjo Player\,” he has been devoted to transforming an instrument largely associated with country and bluegrass into a tool for rebellious exploration. \n\n\n\nAs a composer and bandleader\, Seabrook has released ten albums. His ensemble music leans on a wide range of variance: jump cuts\, improvisation\, humor\, and extreme dynamics. Rolling Stone Magazine noted\, “The fiercely dexterous musician has launched a number of bands combining serious chops with manic intensity and a left-field compositional vision.” Brandon is an accomplished solo artist\, named Best Guitarist in New York City by the Village Voice. Over the last decade\, he has established himself as one of the premier improvising musicians in Los Angeles\, playing solo and in numerous collaborative projects. Shiroishi may well be considered a foundational player in the city’s vast musical expanse. \n\n\n\nHe has presented work and performed at the Museum of Contemporary Art\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Natural History Museum\, and the International Museum of Surgical Sciences. His lifelong interest has been to work with people from all walks of life\, bringing artists and communities together in ways that may create something uniquely valuable to everyone involved. He is currently focused primarily on his multimedia collaboration with New Mexican visual artist ACVilla\, his solo piano work Infinite-Sum Game\, and workshops on the collaborative process.Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area\, Thollem began playing the piano\, composing\, and improvising as a child\, absorbing the sounds of his culturally diverse upbringing. With the noted artist Tere Lojero as his mother and a music aficionado father to guide his interests\, Morales discovered a passion for writing and manifesting his own music. Working on the East Coast scene after heading to Berklee School of Music in 2012\, Morales migrated westward to Los Angeles in 2018. \n\n\n\nMorales launched what has become a diverse discography with the sometimes fusion-tinged tracks of 2021’s Luna\, followed by the improvisation-leaning trio album Eclipse in 2022 and The Endless Ride last year\, in 2023. The pop resonances and qualities on that album\, including vocals\, are in marked contrast with the almost entirely acoustic sextet context of Seven Days. \n\n\n\nOf the variety between projects\, Morales explains\, “I want to explore different areas of my artistry. My first record had a very youthful essence to it. I wanted to put everything within seven songs–my writing\, my playing\, and everything else. And then the second record was the complete opposite because it is completely stripped down.” With The Endless Ride\, he explains\, “I wanted to also experiment with all my influences of when I was younger because when I started playing music\, I wasn’t really listening to jazz at all.” \n\n\n\nClearly\, from the evidence of Seven Days\, Morales is by now deeply steeped in jazz\, as a player and composer\, and expertly equipped to create his own new vision within the genre. After working intensively in Venezuela with artists such as Soledad Bravo and Ilan Chester\, Otmaro moves to Los Angeles in 1989 to join the group of great names of the jazz world such as Alex Acuña\, Justo Almario y Abraham Laboriel\, with whom still collaborates in diverse projects. \n\n\n\nWith an intense musical career\, filled with concerts\, workshops and recordings worldwide\, Otmaro worked for 5 years with Dianne Reeves as a pianist and musical director. During this period\, Otmaro participated in the recording project of her CD “In The Moment – Live in Concert”\, which won the Grammy Award 2001. Joan Beard Mitchell was born and raised on Chicago’s southside; her works show an aesthetic connection to the experimentalism and afro-surrealist ideals within the Chicago Black Arts Movement. Her artistic development reached merit in Syracuse\, New York and she continued to create in isolation after moving to Orange County\, California\, where she met her abrupt death in 1983.  \n\n\n\nIn Images Beyond\, JBM’s words are organized into a dramatic expression played by actor/vocalist Maia and interwoven with original music by Nicole Mitchell\, in an environment that visually features JBM’s paintings\, watercolors and graphic art. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nafro-surrealist folk art by Nicole’s mother\, Joan Beard Mitchell \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNicole Mitchell\n\n\n\nNicole M. Mitchell is an award-winning creative flutist\, composer\, bandleader and educator. She is perhaps best known for her work as a flutist\, having developed a unique improvisational language and having been repeatedly awarded “Top Flutist of the Year” by Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll and the Jazz Journalists Association (2010-2022). Mitchell initially emerged from Chicago’s innovative music scene in the late 90s. He began studying the violin at the age of five\, but since borrowing a viola for a jam session at the 1998 ECM festival in Badenweiler\, he has made the viola his instrument of choice. Important influences on Maneri’s work – in addition to all the major forces of jazz – include Baroque music (which he studied with Juilliard String Quartet co-founder Robert Koff)\, Elliott Carter\, and the Second Viennese School of Schoenberg\, Berg and Webern\, which was also of central importance to his father\, the late\, great saxophonist\, clarinettist\, composer and educator Joe Maneri. Of his studies with Koff\, Mat Maneri has said: “Studying Baroque music helped me to find my sound. The pianist Cory Smythe (decorated with a Grammy for the recording “In 27 Pieces: The Hilary Hahn Encores” 2015) originally comes from new serious music and\, is a lust-walking border crosser between new music and jazz improvisation. His legacy continues to be a presence in the jazz community. \n\n\n\nTo celebrate what would have been Sam’s 100th birthday\, composer and arranger Mark Masters has focused on the years that Sam was a Blue Note Records artist. For the first time\, Sam’s small group compositions will be reimagined for thirteen musicians. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSam Rivers\n\n\n\nWhatever the size of the ensemble\, Sam Rivers’ music was rooted in the blues. All you may need to know about him is that in 1964 he went directly from T-Bone Walker’s band to the Miles Davis Quintet\, from playing “Stormy Monday” with the showboating but gifted Texas bluesman to playing “So What” with the Prince of Darkness\, and never missed a beat. The son of traveling gospel musicians\, Rivers was born in Oklahoma in 1923\, grew up in Chicago and Little Rock\, enlisted in the U.S. Navy\, and studied with composer Alan Hovhaness at the Boston Conservatory of Music. That combination of blues\, gospel\, and cerebral art music would serve him well for the rest of his life. \n\n\n\n“Sam always rocked\,” says Marty Khan\, Rivers’ manager in the ’70s. “He could be way out there and still be absolutely rocking. It was that blues groove and that blues language always kept him grounded\, even when he got far out. He seldom got into that ether area\, that spacy realm that a lot of his colleagues did. And if he did it for a minute\, he’d go right back to the slamming.”https://samrivers.com/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMark Masters\n\n\n\nMark Masters (b. 1957) is an inventive and prolific composer and arranger from southern California.  He organized his first ensemble in 1982.  In 1990\, Masters wrote the album PRIESTESS (Capri 74031) to feature Billy Harper and Jimmy Knepper.  A subsequent recording with Knepper\, THE JIMMY KNEPPER SONGBOOK (Focus 1001\, 1993) featured arrangements by Masters of Knepper’s compositions. \n\n\n\nThe most recent recording by Masters\, OUR METIER (Capri 74150\, 2018)\, features Andrew Cyrille\, Oliver Lake\, Gary Foster\, Mark Turner\, Tim Hagans\,  Putter Smith\, and Dave Woodley in a large ensemble setting.  Michael Ullman calls OUR METIER “…an eclectic and beautifully accomplished big band recording that is made up of\, for once\, Masters’ originals.” DOWNBEAT magazine awarded the recording four stars in its December 2018 issue \n\n\n\nhttps://www.markmastersmusic.com/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBilly Harper\n\n\n\nIn his early recordings and performances with leaders such as Art Blakey\, Lee Morgan\, Max Roach\, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis and Gil Evans\, during the 60s and 70s\, Billy Harper already had a massive sound on the tenor saxophone\, combining John Coltrane’s spiraling intensity with a bluesy brawn that pointed back to his Texas origins.  \n\n\n\nHarper’s authority has only grown with age: a half-century on\, he stands as one of the most commanding horn men on the planet\, a pillar of stirring post-bop jazz whose robust back catalog seems long overdue for rediscovery. \n\n\n\nFor half a century he has been performing his original music with the Billy Harper Quintet all over the globe\, and recording over a dozen albums as leader and composer\, many of them considered “historic”. After a pandemic induced hiatus\, Billy Harper and his Quintet are back in action\, starting 2023 off with a series of #CapraBlackIsBack performances\, marking what will be a year long celebration of his 80th birthday\, and the 50th anniversary of his renowned debut album “Capra Black”.

The most primal of instruments\, it can melt you or move you to tears on the spot. Then it’s the saxophone\, one-step removed from the human voice\, and the next most powerful messenger in music. Johnny Hodges\, Albert Ayler\, Steve Lacy\, Pharoah Sanders\, Oliver Lake\, King Curtis\, Tim Berne\, John Butcher – to name only a few of the many singular voices on the instrument who\, with one short phrase or even one sound\, can take your breath away\, or excite and inspire you to great heights. \n\n\n\nMultiply that power\, that capability\, times 4\, and you have a saxophone quartet. Rova Sax Quartet: a group that can move you the way an Eastern European choir of voices can move you\, but also a group with force\, a force that can feel as if it’s tearing the walls of the listening space down\, or that can simulate the complex sound of a machine\, or one of nature’s wild phenomena\, or conversely\, the almost-silent overlapping sound patterns heard with eyes closed in a field in the wilderness. \n\n\n\nRova Sax Quartet’s musical goal has always been\, since 1978\, to instigate\, to challenge\, and to inspire. They perform the compositions of Travis Laplante. \n\n\n\nThe saxophonists in Battle Trance push their instruments to the limit. They utilize the full sonic palette of the saxophone\, shedding new light on it as an ensemble instrument. They circular breathe to build continuous and hypnotic waves of sound\, layer multiphonics to create intricate textures\, and use blistering fast lines that seem to liquefy into each other. Unorthodox articulations and unusual fingerings are also a part of the vast sonic vocabulary that the members of Battle Trance are demanded to master. This being said\, Battle Trance is also an ensemble that knows that a simple melody has the ability to shatter the heart. \n\n\n\nIn Battle Trance\, all of the players are asked to surrender their personal expectations\, agendas\, and desires in service of the Whole Sound. It is then that the individuals can enter into the true structure of the whole ensemble. Paradoxically\, it is the selfless structure that allows the capacity of the ensemble members to increase\, in service to a sound that is far greater than the sum of its parts. By surrendering their egos to the best of their abilities\, there is a heightening of the ensemble’s collective force\, control\, feeling of space\, sensitivity\, freedom of movement\, sonic spectrum\, breath\, and ability to penetrate the heart. His formal music training began at the age of six with instruction on the piano. Shortly after\, Jonathan transitioned to the drum set at the Colburn School of Performing Arts and studied with Billy Higgins from The World Stage.  \n\n\n\nHe was asked to tour with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter’s band at the age of 23. And he’s just as direct in conversation\, speaking straight from the heart\, and getting right to the point. – WBGO \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Murray\n\n\n\nThe career of Oakland-born tenor saxophonist David Murray (1955) went through at least three well-defined phases after he moved to New York in 1975: a confrontational free-jazz phase in which he developed a wildly dissonant style of playing\, an erudite phase in which he focused on composition rather than performance\, and a phase in which his performance and composition came together into an elegant (as opposed to furious) display of idiosyncratic languages at the instrument that also mirrored a rediscovery of jazz tradition. \n\n\n\nAn alumnus in Los Angeles of Horace Tapscott’s Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra\, itself an outgrowth of the Underground Musicians’ Association (UGMA)\, formed in 1961\, Murray started out as an angry young man of jazz. While he was joining the World Saxophone Quartet\, Murray recorded Flowers for Albert (june 1976) with trumpeter Olu Dara\, bassist Fred Hopkins and drummer Phillip Wilson. The album contained Murray’s Flowers For Albert and Ballad For A Decomposed Beauty (virtually a long solo) as well as Butch Morris’ Joanne’s Satin Green Dress\, and introduced a visceral vibrato a` la Coleman Hawkins gone awry.

Contemporary and classic jazz\, hip-hop\, R&B\, Chicago house\, neo-soul—to Hill\, they’re all essential elements of the profound African-American creative heritage he’s a part of. “It all comes from the same tree\,” he says. “They simply blossomed from different branches.”Born in Chicago in 1987 and raised on the city’s culturally rich South Side\, Hill began playing drums at age 4\, before switching to trumpet in the 6th grade. Born in São Paulo\, Brazil\, in the late sixties\, she grew up in a family of Bossa Nova innovators – her father\, a singer and songwriter\, her mother\, a poet and lyricist. Luciana’s work as a performer transcends traditional boundaries around musical styles\, offering solid roots in jazz\, sophisticated lineage in world music\, and an enlightened approach to new music. Ms. Souza began her recording career at age three with a radio commercial\, and recorded more than 200 jingles and soundtracks\, becoming a first-call studio veteran at age sixteen. She spent four years on faculty at Berklee College of Music in Boston\, where she received a Bachelor’s in Jazz Composition. Ms. Souza earned a Master’s degree in Jazz Studies from New England Conservatory of Music and taught for four years at Manhattan School of Music\, in New York City. From 2005 to 2010\, Luciana was the Jazz Artist in Residence with the prestigious San Francisco Performances. His compositions have appeared on recordings by the likes of saxophonist Joe Lovano\, guitarist John Abercrombie\, drummer Peter Erskine\, pianist Joey Calderazzo and singer Kurt Elling.
