With years devoted to classical music study followed by the tutelage of American jazz masters\, pianist and composer Todd Cochran’s music reflects a wide-ranging musical palette. In his art he has continued to build upon this foundation\, incorporating diverse musical influences from the traditions of African and Asian diaspora\, global pop\, and contemporary art music culture. Todd’s happenstance was to grow up in San Francisco during the civil rights era\, a transformational time in America’s story. The city was multi-dimensional and the echoes of being a child of the cultural revolution have never left him. \n\n\n\nTodd’s work as a pianist\, composer and electronic musician has significantly influenced others. He has since become an internationally recognized master of many different wind instruments. He got his musical start by playing clarinet\, flute\, and tenor sax. He eventually gravitated towards the flute and bass clarinet. He has led a long and glittering career\, both in NYC and on the West Coast. His personal style has ranged far\, from the avant-garde\, to funk\, to straight ahead and third stream. He gained early notoriety as a member of Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi Sextet\, and would go on to collaborate with Herbie on a number of projects over his career. He has released numerous albums as a leader\, including ‘Jewel in the Lotus’\, and ‘Slow Traffic To the Left’. He has collaborated with the likes of Miles Davis\, Jack Dejohnette\, Mike Clark\, Lee Morgan\, Andrew Hill\, McCoy Tyner and Lenny White.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBilly Mohler\n\n\n\nBilly Mohler is an exploratory jazz bassist who has also amassed wide-ranging credits in the pop world as a GRAMMY-winning writer\, producer\, multi-instrumentalist and session player\, working with Dolly Parton\, Macy Gray\, Lady Gaga\, Nile Rogers\, Sia\, Awolnation\, Mavis Staples\, Kelly Clarkson\, Steven Tyler\, Jon Brion and a host of others. A graduate of Berklee College of Music\, Mohler attended the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz as one of only five students\, studying with Herbie Hancock\, Wayne Shorter and other luminaries. \n\n\n\nOn October 13\, Billy will release Ultraviolet via Dayna Stephen’s Contagious Music label. Joan Beard Mitchell was born and raised on Chicago’s southside; her works show an aesthetic connection to the experimentalism and afro-surrealist ideals within the Chicago Black Arts Movement. Her artistic development reached merit in Syracuse\, New York and she continued to create in isolation after moving to Orange County\, California\, where she met her abrupt death in 1983.  \n\n\n\nIn Images Beyond\, JBM’s words are organized into a dramatic expression played by actor/vocalist Maia and interwoven with original music by Nicole Mitchell\, in an environment that visually features JBM’s paintings\, watercolors and graphic art. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nafro-surrealist folk art by Nicole’s mother\, Joan Beard Mitchell \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNicole Mitchell\n\n\n\nNicole M. Mitchell is an award-winning creative flutist\, composer\, bandleader and educator. She is perhaps best known for her work as a flutist\, having developed a unique improvisational language and having been repeatedly awarded “Top Flutist of the Year” by Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll and the Jazz Journalists Association (2010-2022). Mitchell initially emerged from Chicago’s innovative music scene in the late 90s. He began studying the violin at the age of five\, but since borrowing a viola for a jam session at the 1998 ECM festival in Badenweiler\, he has made the viola his instrument of choice. Important influences on Maneri’s work – in addition to all the major forces of jazz – include Baroque music (which he studied with Juilliard String Quartet co-founder Robert Koff)\, Elliott Carter\, and the Second Viennese School of Schoenberg\, Berg and Webern\, which was also of central importance to his father\, the late\, great saxophonist\, clarinettist\, composer and educator Joe Maneri. Of his studies with Koff\, Mat Maneri has said: “Studying Baroque music helped me to find my sound. In 2023\, he won the International Society of Jazz Arrangers and Composers (ISJAC)/USF “Prize For Emerging Black Composers” for his piece Eye In The Sky written for Big Band. His legacy continues to be a presence in the jazz community. \n\n\n\nTo celebrate what would have been Sam’s 100th birthday\, composer and arranger Mark Masters has focused on the years that Sam was a Blue Note Records artist. For the first time\, Sam’s small group compositions will be reimagined for thirteen musicians. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSam Rivers\n\n\n\nWhatever the size of the ensemble\, Sam Rivers’ music was rooted in the blues. All you may need to know about him is that in 1964 he went directly from T-Bone Walker’s band to the Miles Davis Quintet\, from playing “Stormy Monday” with the showboating but gifted Texas bluesman to playing “So What” with the Prince of Darkness\, and never missed a beat. The son of traveling gospel musicians\, Rivers was born in Oklahoma in 1923\, grew up in Chicago and Little Rock\, enlisted in the U.S. Navy\, and studied with composer Alan Hovhaness at the Boston Conservatory of Music. That combination of blues\, gospel\, and cerebral art music would serve him well for the rest of his life. \n\n\n\n“Sam always rocked\,” says Marty Khan\, Rivers’ manager in the ’70s. “He could be way out there and still be absolutely rocking. It was that blues groove and that blues language always kept him grounded\, even when he got far out. He seldom got into that ether area\, that spacy realm that a lot of his colleagues did. This being said\, Battle Trance is also an ensemble that knows that a simple melody has the ability to shatter the heart. \n\n\n\nIn Battle Trance\, all of the players are asked to surrender their personal expectations\, agendas\, and desires in service of the Whole Sound. And he’s just as direct in conversation\, speaking straight from the heart\, and getting right to the point. – WBGO \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Murray\n\n\n\nThe career of Oakland-born tenor saxophonist David Murray (1955) went through at least three well-defined phases after he moved to New York in 1975: a confrontational free-jazz phase in which he developed a wildly dissonant style of playing\, an erudite phase in which he focused on composition rather than performance\, and a phase in which his performance and composition came together into an elegant (as opposed to furious) display of idiosyncratic languages at the instrument that also mirrored a rediscovery of jazz tradition. \n\n\n\nAn alumnus in Los Angeles of Horace Tapscott’s Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra\, itself an outgrowth of the Underground Musicians’ Association (UGMA)\, formed in 1961\, Murray started out as an angry young man of jazz. While he was joining the World Saxophone Quartet\, Murray recorded Flowers for Albert (june 1976) with trumpeter Olu Dara\, bassist Fred Hopkins and drummer Phillip Wilson. The album contained Murray’s Flowers For Albert and Ballad For A Decomposed Beauty (virtually a long solo) as well as Butch Morris’ Joanne’s Satin Green Dress\, and introduced a visceral vibrato a` la Coleman Hawkins gone awry. Wong was born in Hawaii and grew up in Japan\, though he is half Chinese. Together with Matt Papich he formed the duo Ecstatic Sunshine and released two albums. Wong left Ecstatic Sunshine in 2007 to fully focus on Ponytail and solo projects. Wong’s first solo record in 2009 on Wildfire Wildfire was entitled Seasons. Wong published a second solo-album Infinite Love in October 2010. A 40-minute piece cut into 15 tracks and then re-done on a 2nd CD. This instrumental release appeared on Thrill Jockey. After releasing the record he went on tour in Europe. Although Dustin Wong had announced that Whartscape 2010 in Baltimore\, Maryland would be the last Ponytail show\, a new album was announced. The band released their third full-length album\, titled Do Whatever You Want All The Time\, in April 2011.However Ponytail broke up on September 22. 2011. Wong moved to New York and continued as a solo artist and published his third record in February 2012. Dustin contributed to Flamingods’ debut album Sun\, providing guitar backing for the album’s lead single ‘Quesso’. He relocated to Tokyo in 2012\, and began collaborating with Takako Minekawa. The Ark was also formed as a response to the racial inequality in the US. Artists subjected to prejudice who saw opportunities denied to them found an outlet to express themselves via the Ark. The ensemble began with few people rehearsing in Horace’s garage\, soon doing free shows at parks and churches\, workshops at schools and other public events. Since its inception\, the Ark has been performing with an ever-expanding roster of talented artists. She is a composer\, vocalist\, scholar\, educator\, activist and organizer\, informed by anti-racism\, decolonization and anti-capitalism and is the co-organizer of Musicians Against Police Brutality and co-founder of South Asian Artists in Diaspora (SAAID). As a bandleader\, she is the creative force behind the protest infused  band Elder Ones and vocal group Lines of Light\, receiving critical praise from such publications as The New York Times\, Pitchfork\, Downbeat and Wire Magazine. Kidambi topped the categories of “Rising Star Vocalist”\, “Rising Star Composer” and “Rising Star Jazz Group” in the Downbeat Critics Poll for 2019 and “Female Vocalist” in El Intruso’s International Critics Poll. Kidambi is a key collaborator in Mary Halvorson’s latest sextet Code Girl\, Angels & Demons with Darius Jones\, duos with Luke Stewart\, Maria Grand and Matteo Liberatore\, several projects with William Parker. Kidambi had the opportunity to collaborate with and receive mentorship from Muhal Richard Abrams and Robert Ashley before their passing. It is the primal and primary vehicle of my musical identity. After several solo CDs that explore the musical investigation of extended techniques and electro-acoustic performance through structured improvisation and composition\, my quintet music has a somewhat different agenda. The music for this evening is centered around a personal approach to the jazz tradition and song form: beauty of melody\, counterpoint and harmony\, swing\, rhythmic invention and cyclical form. In addition I seek to integrate timbre sculpting\, metric modulation\, free meter and gradience\, i.e. the blurring of boundaries between pitch and noise\, meter and texture\, form and feeling. Above all is the collaborative and improvisational power of the band that ultimately shapes the music. – Mark Dresser \n\n\n\nMark Dresser is a Grammy nominated\, internationally renowned bass player\, improviser\, and composer. At the core of his music is an obsession and commitment to expanding the sonic\, musical\, and expressive possibilities of the contrabass. He has recorded over one hundred-fifty CDs including ten CDs as composer/bandleader\, five solo recordings and a DVD and his most recent solo LP Modicana (2017).  From 1985 to 1994\, he was a member of Anthony Braxton’s Quartet. Between being extraordinarily busy with touring and there being somewhat of a lack of inspiration (perhaps confidence) to write new music\, I sort of let that part of my musicianship slip so to speak. And then\, COVID-19 hit (as well as re emergence of this country’s deep racial and social issues)\, and since\, it has been especially difficult to find motivation to even practice my instrument\, let alone sit and compose\, since there are no longer many opportunities to perform live anymore. So\, when I was approached with this amazing opportunity\, it was exactly the jolt I needed to obsess over music again\, and the result were these three short pieces\, written and completed entirely during my time of quarantining in Los Angeles.
