And he’s just as direct in conversation\, speaking straight from the heart\, and getting right to the point. – WBGO \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Murray\n\n\n\nThe career of Oakland-born tenor saxophonist David Murray (1955) went through at least three well-defined phases after he moved to New York in 1975: a confrontational free-jazz phase in which he developed a wildly dissonant style of playing\, an erudite phase in which he focused on composition rather than performance\, and a phase in which his performance and composition came together into an elegant (as opposed to furious) display of idiosyncratic languages at the instrument that also mirrored a rediscovery of jazz tradition. \n\n\n\nAn alumnus in Los Angeles of Horace Tapscott’s Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra\, itself an outgrowth of the Underground Musicians’ Association (UGMA)\, formed in 1961\, Murray started out as an angry young man of jazz. While he was joining the World Saxophone Quartet\, Murray recorded Flowers for Albert (june 1976) with trumpeter Olu Dara\, bassist Fred Hopkins and drummer Phillip Wilson. Wong was born in Hawaii and grew up in Japan\, though he is half Chinese. Together with Matt Papich he formed the duo Ecstatic Sunshine and released two albums. Wong left Ecstatic Sunshine in 2007 to fully focus on Ponytail and solo projects. Wong’s first solo record in 2009 on Wildfire Wildfire was entitled Seasons. Wong published a second solo-album Infinite Love in October 2010. A 40-minute piece cut into 15 tracks and then re-done on a 2nd CD. This instrumental release appeared on Thrill Jockey. After releasing the record he went on tour in Europe. Although Dustin Wong had announced that Whartscape 2010 in Baltimore\, Maryland would be the last Ponytail show\, a new album was announced. The band released their third full-length album\, titled Do Whatever You Want All The Time\, in April 2011.However Ponytail broke up on September 22. 2011. Wong moved to New York and continued as a solo artist and published his third record in February 2012. And then\, COVID-19 hit (as well as re emergence of this country’s deep racial and social issues)\, and since\, it has been especially difficult to find motivation to even practice my instrument\, let alone sit and compose\, since there are no longer many opportunities to perform live anymore. So\, when I was approached with this amazing opportunity\, it was exactly the jolt I needed to obsess over music again\, and the result were these three short pieces\, written and completed entirely during my time of quarantining in Los Angeles. From the historic recording session in 2005 to the many performances at local venues and festivals\, including the 2009 Angel City Jazz Festival\, the band has featured such luminaries as Azar Lawrence\, Dwight Trible\, Kamau Daáood\, Phil Ranelin\, Roberto Miranda\, as well as rising stars Brandon Coleman\, Kamasi Washington\, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson\, Randal Fisher\, and many others. The Gathering’s performance at The Angel City Jazz Festival will be led by Jesse Sharps and feature Nyofu Tyson\, Randal Fisher\, Peter Jacobson\, Johnny Sandoval\, and Kalum Harrison. A virtual screening of the feature documentary\, The Gathering: Roots & Branches of Los Angeles Jazz\, will be available for streaming during the festival. He has performed and worked internationally with many acclaimed composers and performers across Turkish\, Armenian\, and Flamenco traditions. Randal Fisher was 15 years old when he attended the 2005 session at CALArts and has since become an impressive composer and bandleader of his own ensemble\, as well as playing regularly with Dexter Story’s Wondem Ensemble\, Eitho-Cali\, and the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. Peter Jacobson has been a member of Grammy-winning group Quetzal\, a soloist with Kamasi Washington\, and regularly appears with the San Diego Symphony\, Ryhe\, and the Arohi Ensemble. Being of Chinese heritage myself from Canada\, I found it necessary to research and understand the struggle my ancestors experienced in a new land. \n\n\n\nPart I – “The First Settlers” – Is inspired by Ah Luce and Ah Fou who were the first Chinese American immigrants in LA (1850) \n\n\n\nPart II – “The Transcontinental Railroad (1865-69)” – tells the story of 20\,000 Chinese laborers who worked tirelessly on the first Transcontinental Railroad. Many of these melodies were inspired by traditional folk songs passed down through generations. \n\n\n\nPart III – “The Chinese Massacre of 1871” – was a race riot that occured on Oct 24\, 1871 in Los Angeles when a mob of 500 white and hispanic persons robbed and murdered Chinese residents on Calle de Los Negros. Due to this event\, 20 Chinese immigrants were lynched that day making it the biggest mass lynching in American history. \n\n\n\nPart IV – “Repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act / Calling the Ancestors” – The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 barred immigrants from entering the US and receiving citizenship. This act wasn’t repealed until 1943.
