About

Brooklyn-based experimental artist and trumpeter Chris Ryan Williams explores electroacoustic composition, free jazz, and sound installation. His critically acclaimed debut long-play (LP), Odu: Vibration II, is an enveloping, immersive record exploring cavernous resonance and mythic descents into darkness.

Chris Ryan Williams is an artist and musician based in Brooklyn, NY whose work unfolds through electroacoustic composition and performance installation. His EP Live earned praise from The Quietus for its “dazzling collaged pieces that ricochet between improvised passages and written material” (Peter Margasak, The Quietus). His debut LP Odu: Vibration II, praised by Pitchfork and named one of NPR’s Best New Albums, reimagines a journey through Plato’s Cave. Williams’ work has been performed and presented extensively across the U.S. and Europe, including at the Venice Biennale, Roulette Intermedium, Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Royal Danish Playhouse, National Sawdust, and Performa Biennial.

“[Odu: Vibration II is] Williams’ strongest statement as a composer to date…an expansive and enveloping longform fusion of ambient atmospheres, otherworldly soundscaping, and some of the cleanest, purest tones that brass and reeds can produce.”

— Pitchfork

“He is the definition of ‘ancient to the future’ on his instrument.”

— Melvin Gibbs
